- Driving Tips For Success As A Learner Driver
Driving Tips For Success 1. Doing a bit of homework for yourself can really help. Your instructor may set you some tasks to do, things to reflect on or read up on. Try searching YouTube to get some information about the driving syllabus and what to expect on the day of the test. Many people have made blogs on their own experiences that may come in handy. Also the DVSA have published their own set of videos to support you. Some of the videos may relate to the lesson you have just had or the lesson planned for next week that you will be doing, i.e. roundabouts and dual carriageways are a really good place to start. 2. Get involved, at the end of each of your lessons, it is advisable to have a look back on the lesson and have a chat with your instructor on what you need to work on to improve and better your progress. You could compile a summary of the lesson to self reflect. What went well? What Didn’t go so well? And what do I want to improve on as a personal target for next lesson. Discuss this with your instructor as itwill help you improve at a faster more substantial pace while also helping your instructor understand how you feel your doing and what your personal weaknesses are. 3. As your driving test is approaching have an in-depth conversation with your instructor on where you are regarding progress with your lessons – Are you on track with where you need to be for your driving test? Do you need more lessons to practice certain areas? Will you have enough time to practice these? There is no point in taking the test if you are not ready or you are setting yourself up to fail. 4. On the driving test day, make sure you have had a good nights sleep and have killed of any nerves, you will go out for your instructor before the test to have a warm up session, stay focussed and don’t let that mind wonder. 5. At the test Centre you will sign in at the waiting area. Get your license ready and key for the car you are using for your test. Make sure you have been to the toilet, a full bladder can be a distraction on your test. Try not to worry and chill out for 5 minutes. Your examiner will come out to introduce themselves to you and to explain what is going to happen on your driving test. They may look a bit serious but try to be yourself, there is no need to impress them. You don’t have to make conversation with them but it may help you feel more at ease. They are not there to be a friend and you only have to deal with them for about 40 minutes. If you do spark up a conversation during the test then try to avoid continuing the discussion when you need to concentrate. Remember it’s your driving test so show them what you can do. Take control, be responsible for the decisions you make. 6. During your driving test do not try and second guess what your driving examiner is thinking or what they may be about to say or do. Just stay focused on your driving. If you think you have made a mistake, remove that thought from your mind and move on. If you keep mulling over it then more mistakes will be made. You never know that mistake might not have been as bad as you thought and in the end you can’t change what has already happened, you can only move forward with the rest of the test. When you arrive back at the test centre, make sure you take your car out of gear and put on the Parking brake and put it into neutral, then switch off the engine.and relax, your test is over. When you pass your driving test your examiner will take your provisional driving licence off of you and give you a pass certificate in its place, the examiner will then send off for you and you will receive your full driving licence within a couple of weeks of passing your driving test. Now you are a fully qualified driver, remember please be patient with learner drivers when you see them on the road. You were like them once. - Awareness and planning
Awareness and planning The behaviour of other drivers could jeopardise your test. You need to be aware of what everybody around you is doing. Your rear view mirror will help determin if a driver is coming up fast from behind, driving to close or atempting to overtake. Avoid getting caught out with drivers undertaking you, keep to the left if the road is clear on the dual carriageway. Look ahead and into roundabouts, what are the cars doing and how are they driving? Is there lack of indication, are they driving fast, where are the positioned, how will they affect you? At the end of the day you want a pass – awareness and planning is a key part in driving success. Be the driver you want to be. #4frontDrivingSchool #Loughborough #SimonHarrison
- Not signaling
There are too many people who don’t signal, pull out without warning, don’t signal off of roundabouts or tell you what direction you are heading. It causes confusion and delay and in some cases can jeopardise a learners test. To overcome this hurdal you need to observe other drivers behaviour and avoid risk and confrontation. How are the other cars positioned, what speed are they traveling, what is the likelyhood of them carying on or turning. Judgement is important and how you anticipate can determin the balance between hesitation and risk. #4frontDrivingSchoolLoughborough #learntodrivewithSimon

When should you start learning to drive? You can start learning to drive when you reach 17 years of age in the UK. - The structure of a Driving Lesson
What is the structure of a Driving Lesson with 4front Driving School? When you take a course of driving lessons, your training is individually structured to meet your own personal needs and requirements. Here at 4front Driving School this means that the lessons are structured differently for each individual student as everyone is different and will work at their own pace. We strive to succeed our approach to fulfill our Aims and Objectives As lessons progress and you move forward to the next level, the structure of each lesson is tailored around you – ‘The Learner’. We never use a one lesson fits all approach. We change the pace and teaching technique to suite the level of ability, knowledge and skill. As a general guide, the usual lesson format for an average lesson would look something like this: Recap on the previous lesson, The learning objectives / targets for the lesson ahead. Driving to a relevant location for lesson, if required, at early stages this might be by the instructor. Discussion any questions or queeries that the student may have. Guided and prompted practise of the current topic, some of this may be shown as a diagram or from a visual guide, demonstrated then practised. To incorporate the above in the general driving alongside the other areas already covered. To question mistakes so that you the student can work out why you might have missed something. Self reflection and self discipline makes an independent driver. At the end of the lesson we will recap & set a plan or target for the next lesson. A course of driving lessons will be structured on a weekly basis to best suit each individual learner’s level of ability. With each new pupil, these needs will always be different. People are unique and everyone learns at a different pace. Where one pupil may excel at certain driving tasks and yet struggle with others, other learners will struggle in completely different areas, and excel in different skill. Some students find that it all starts comming together after a few attempts and thereafter it comes natural to them. However learning involves effort from both the instructor and from yourself. Progression takes place best when the learner is attentive and actively attempts to consolidate the new material for each new topic. We will suggest free Apps and guides to help you reflect back on the lessons so that the information that you have learnt starts to make sense and you can easily refer to it and reflect back on it with ease when you return to the following lesson. The App to reflect back on lessons is https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=rightlane39.drivebook These are the areas that will be covered in your lessons. - Tips for learner drivers – planning ahead, addressing mistakes, taking responsibility
Tips for Learner Drivers Addressing Mistakes: When learning to drive it is important to reflect back on mistakes you make. Mistakes are normal and part of learning. Its very important that you can understand why you might have made the mistake and what you would do next time to prevent it from happening again. This will help you become a safe and competent driver. If you make a mistake and realise you have made an error – discuss it with your instructor. Try and address what you think you should have done differently. This is good self assessment. Planning Ahead: By observing the traffic lights ahead you can see, learn and eventually predict the sequence of lights – what might happen next? When are they likely to change? Will I need to slow down, can I continue to go if I slow down a bit before the lights with the anticipation of them changing from red to green by the time I get there? Take responsibility: Try and take responsibility as a learner driver as soon as possible. You need to become less and less reliant on your instructor to step in, guide you or tell you what you should or shouldn’t do. You will be ready for your test sooner if you become more independent. Get your theory test out the way early on and build your knowledge and understanding of the highway code as soon as possible. This will help you progress towards independence.
