How to Prepare for Your First Automatic Driving Lesson (Less to Worry About!)
It's completely normal to feel a mix of excitement and nerves before your first driving lesson. But with an automatic car, you have one less major thing to master—making the start of your journey even smoother!
At 4front Driving School, we specialise in making your learning experience straightforward and stress-free. There is absolutely nothing to worry about! Go into your lesson with an open mind, and focus on enjoying the new opportunity.
Here is your simple, actionable checklist covering exactly what to prepare and what to expect on your first day in an automatic car.
1. The Essentials: What to Bring
You cannot start your lesson without these items, so make sure they are ready the night before!
Your Provisional Driving Licence
This is the most critical item. You must bring your provisional driving license with you, as your instructor needs to see that you are legally allowed to drive on the road. You will not be allowed to continue with the lesson without it.
Appropriate Footwear and Clothing
Footwear:
Choose flat, comfortable shoes with a thin sole. You need to feel the brake and accelerator pedals accurately. Please avoid thick-soled boots or any type of heel, as your instructor may ask you to change them if they are deemed unsafe.
Clothing:
Wear comfy clothes that allow you to move freely. You'll need to be able to stretch your legs and move your arms with ease, so choose something that won't restrict you while seated and steering.
Glasses, Lenses, and Sunglasses
If you usually wear glasses or contact lenses, you must bring them. It is essential that you can see things clearly when driving. If the day is sunny or likely to be sunny, we also suggest bringing sunglasses to help you deal with glare and excessive reflection.
2. Before the Lesson: Get Your Head in the Game
A little mental preparation goes a long way toward boosting your confidence.
Get a Good Night’s Sleep
Make sure you get a good night’s sleep before your lesson so you wake up feeling refreshed, alert, and ready to learn. Also, ensure you have not consumed any alcohol that could still be in your system.
Skim the Highway Code
Try to find some time for a quick read of the Highway Code before your first lesson. You don't need to memorise everything, but gaining a basic understanding of key road rules and signs will:
* Give you a head start in understanding the basics.
* Accelerate your learning process with your instructor.
3. In the Car: Settling In and Staying Relaxed
Your instructor will guide you through this process, but here is what you can expect as soon as you get in the driver's seat.
The Cockpit Drill (Setting Up)
The first thing you will do is adjust your seat and mirrors. You will want to make sure you can reach the pedals properly for safe braking and accelerating. This is called the 'Cockpit Drill,' and you will quickly develop a routine for setting up your driving position every time you enter the car.
Remember: Mistakes Are Part of Learning
It’s very easy to feel overwhelmed, but try your best to stay relaxed. We believe confidence and self-belief are key to getting the most out of each lesson. Remember this golden rule: mistakes are part of learning!
You are in Safe Hands
Don’t be afraid to ask questions—your instructor is there to help you learn. Rest assured, your instructor has dual controls and will take control of the car immediately if and when needed so that you feel safe and completely in control. Your independence will come as you progress with your learning.
