🚗 First Car Tips for New Drivers (UK): 5 Things You Must Know Before Buying
You’ve passed your test… now comes the part that catches most new drivers out—buying your first car.

Get it right, and you’ve got freedom, independence, and confidence. Get it wrong, and it can cost you thousands in insurance, repairs, and stress.
Like Aayan, one of our recent students, many new drivers go straight for the “dream car”—only to realise the real cost comes after you’ve bought it.
Before you commit, here are 5 essential tips from the team at 4Front Driving School to help you choose your first car the smart way 👇
💰 1. Set a Real-World Budget (Not Just the Car Price)
The biggest mistake new drivers make? Spending all their money on the car itself. You need to factor in:
Insurance – often the biggest cost (especially in your first year).
Road tax – some cars are £0, others aren’t.
Fuel & maintenance – this adds up quickly.
Emergency fund – keep at least £200–£300 aside.

💡 Instructor Tip: If you can’t afford to run it comfortably each month, it’s not the right car—no matter how good it looks.
🛡️ 2. Always Check the Insurance Group FIRST
Before you even go to view a car—get an insurance quote. Cars are ranked from Group 1 (cheapest) to Group 50 (most expensive).
As a new driver, aim for Groups 1–5.
A small 1.0L hatchback is usually affordable; a “sporty-looking” 1.6L could double your premium.
📜 3. Never Skip the History Check
This is non-negotiable. Before buying any car, check the MOT History (free online) to see if it fails every year on the same issues, and run an HPI Check to ensure it isn't stolen or under finance.
⚙️ 4. Automatic vs Manual – Stick to What You Know
If you passed in an automatic, you must drive an automatic—it’s a legal requirement. Beyond that, automatics offer a smoother, more relaxed drive with less stress in traffic.
That’s exactly why learners like Aayan and Lily found them so much easier during their automatic driving lessons.
🛠️ 5. Don’t View a Car Alone
If you’re not confident with cars, take someone experienced. Check for a cold start (the engine should be cold when you arrive) and the tyre condition. If something doesn’t feel right—walk away.
