- Are You Ready? Major First Aid & CPR Changes Coming to the UK Driving Theory Test in February 2026
Are You Ready? Major First Aid & CPR Changes Coming to the UK Driving Theory Test in February 2026 Don't Get Caught Out – Here's What Every Learner Needs to Know Now January is almost over, and with it, the current version of the UK Driving Theory Test. From February 2026 , the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) is rolling out significant updates, adding crucial First Aid and CPR questions to the exam. This isn't just about passing a test; it's about equipping every new driver with life-saving skills. At 4Front Driving School, we believe that being a responsible driver extends beyond just knowing the rules of the road – it includes being prepared for the unexpected. These new questions reflect a vital truth: drivers are often the first on the scene of an incident. What's Changing? A Closer Look at the New Topics The new additions will focus heavily on immediate emergency response, including CPR and the use of defibrillators. You'll need to know the practicalities, not just the theory. 1. CPR & Defibrillators (New for 2026) Chest Compression Depth: Expect questions on the correct depth for adult chest compressions, which is 5-6 cm . Rate of Compressions: You'll need to know the optimal rate: 100-120 per minute (that's about two compressions per second). Recognizing Cardiac Arrest: Understand the signs of cardiac arrest and the immediate steps to take, including calling 999 and starting CPR (hands-only CPR is acceptable and encouraged if you're alone or uncomfortable with rescue breaths). Public Access Defibrillators (AEDs): Crucially, you'll learn that anyone can use a public AED . These devices are designed with clear voice prompts, guiding users through every step. 2. Incident Management Beyond CPR, the test will cover broader incident management scenarios: Initial Actions: What's the very first thing to check at an incident where someone is unconscious? (Hint: your own safety and that of others, then the casualty's airway/breathing). Managing Dangers: Questions will assess your awareness of immediate hazards like leaking fuel, fire, and oncoming traffic. 3. Casualty Care Basics You'll also encounter questions on providing basic care for common injuries: Bleeding: How to effectively manage heavy bleeding (e.g., applying firm, direct pressure). Unconscious Casualties: What not to do (like giving food/drink) and how to safely position them (the recovery position). Burns: Basic treatment, such as cooling with water and covering. 4. Calling for Help Knowing when and how to call 999/112, and what essential information to provide, will also be tested. Why These Changes Matter The DVSA's objective is clear: to empower new drivers with vital life-saving skills. Being prepared to act in an emergency can make all the difference, potentially saving lives and reducing the severity of injuries. As drivers, we often find ourselves in situations where we are the first responders. Is Your Theory Test Booked? Get Ready with 4Front Driving School! If your theory test is scheduled for February 2026 or later, these questions will be part of your exam. Don't leave it to chance! At 4Front Driving School, we provide comprehensive automatic driving lessons in Loughborough, focusing not just on passing your practical test, but on making you a safe, confident, and responsible driver for life. We can integrate discussions around these new theory topics into your lessons, ensuring you're fully prepared. - Driving Through the Slush: Congratulations to Tara on Her 1-Fault Pass!
Driving Through the Slush: Congratulations to Tara on Her 1-Fault Pass! The weather in Leicestershire certainly tried to make things difficult this morning! While snow fell across the county and some areas were hit hard, leaving the roads down to Melton Mowbray quite slushy, it didn't stop Tara from achieving a fantastic result. We are thrilled to announce that Tara passed her driving test today in Melton Mowbray with just one minor driving fault . A New Chapter of Independence This isn't just a pass; it’s a total lifestyle change for Tara. She is now fully equipped to drive herself to work and university, giving her the independence she’s worked so hard for. There is one other person who is likely celebrating today, too—Tara’s dad! After being the designated driver for the commute to work and back, he can finally look forward to a well-deserved lie-in while Tara takes the wheel herself. Overcoming the Elements Driving tests can be nerve-wracking at the best of times, but adding winter weather into the mix requires an extra level of focus and composure. Thankfully, the roads in Melton itself remained clear, and Tara handled the pressure perfectly. Instructor Kieran Tormey and the whole 4front Driving School team are incredibly proud of her performance. Tara, you proved that with the right preparation and a bit of self-belief, you can achieve great things—even when the weather is against you! Ready to Start Your Journey? - Huge Changes Proposed for Learner Drivers: Have Your Say!
Huge Changes Proposed for Learner Drivers: Have Your Say! The government has just published the first Road Safety Strategy in over a decade. As first reported by the BBC , these plans could fundamentally change how you get your driving licence. At 4Front Driving School , we want to make sure our students, parents, and the Loughborough community are fully informed about these potential new rules. What is the "Minimum Learning Period"? The Department for Transport (DfT) is consulting on a Minimum Learning Period (MLP) for all learner drivers. The headline change, as revealed by the BBC, is a proposed 24-week (6-month) mandatory wait between passing your theory test and taking your practical driving test. The main proposals include: A 6-month mandatory wait between your theory and practical exams. A 17-and-a-half age limit: This would effectively end the era of passing just days after turning 17. A minimum number of learning hours and a mandated syllabus to ensure all learners cover specific skills. Why is this being suggested? The goal is to save lives. While 17–24 year olds make up only 6% of licence holders, they are involved in nearly a quarter of all fatal and serious collisions. Ministers believe these measures could reduce such collisions by up to 32% . By enforcing a 6-month gap, the government wants to ensure learners gain experience in varied conditions—such as night driving, heavy traffic, and winter weather—rather than "cramming" for a quick pass. A Comprehensive New Strategy This isn't just about learners. The new strategy aims to reduce road deaths by 65% by 2035 through: Stricter Drink-Driving Laws: Robust enforcement to protect all road users. Older Drivers: Mandatory eye tests for those over 70. Bot Crackdown: New laws to stop automated "bots" from snapping up and reselling test slots. What does this mean for you right now? Nothing has changed yet. These are proposals currently under consultation. However, the DVSA has already removed "average hours to pass" from their sites to discourage rushing. At 4Front, we know everyone learns differently. We focus on building real confidence through Mindfulness and Driving techniques—helping students like Hannah, who recently passed her automatic test with us, stay calm and focused to get that brilliant result! Have Your Say! The consultation closes at 11:59pm on 31 March 2026 . You can share your views on the GOV.UK website . - Behind the Mind of a Driving Examiner- Stop Chasing Perfection: The Essential Shift That Helps Capable Drivers Pass the UK Driving Test
Behind the Mind of a Driving Examiner- Stop Chasing Perfection: The Essential Shift That Helps Capable Drivers Pass the UK Driving Test The UK driving test can feel like a lottery. You drive well in your lessons, your instructor is confident, yet when test day comes, you receive a devastating 'Fail'. Why do genuinely capable learners fail the driving test—even when they can handle complex manoeuvres and check their mirrors flawlessly? The answer is simple: The test is not about perfection. It’s about risk, judgment, and what’s happening inside the examiner’s mind. Pulling Back the Curtain on the Driving Test We are thrilled to announce the launch of our new book, Behind the Mind of a Driving Examiner: The Essential Shift from Test Perfection to Road Judgment , written by 4front Driving School founder, Simon J. Harrison. This is not another "how to drive" manual. This book is the missing link that finally explains the why behind test results. It reveals what examiners truly assess, moment by moment, and why a small technical mistake rarely causes a failure—but a poor judgment call almost always does. The core truth this book teaches is powerful: The driving test is not about being perfect. It is about proving you are safe, predictable, and able to manage risk independently. Once you understand that, everything changes. 🔍 What Makes This Guide Different? Drawing on real examiner insight, practical psychology, and Simon’s extensive experience supporting anxious, autistic, and neurodiverse learners, this book teaches you to stop guessing and start understanding the test from the inside out. Instead of focusing on flawless driving, you will learn to: Think like an examiner and anticipate their priorities. Understand risk instead of exhaustively chasing perfection. Stay calm and in control by knowing exactly where your focus should be under pressure. Avoid the hidden traps that cause confident, experienced drivers to fail. 💡 Inside You’ll Discover Crucial Insights: The book dives deep into the subtle behaviours and key moments that determine a pass or fail: ✔️ The Safe Driver’s Signature – The subtle actions that instantly make an examiner relax and trust your judgment. ✔️ The Panic Point – The exact moment most tests are lost (and a step-by-step guide on how to recover safely). ✔️ Why hesitation can be a serious fault (even when you think you’re being careful and cautious). ✔️ How to recover from stalls, wrong turns, and mistakes without accumulating faults or failing the test. ✔️ The importance of observation, not perfection, when executing manoeuvres. You'll even follow a short, story-based test unfold through the examiner’s eyes, seeing exactly how their decisions turn into minor faults, serious faults, or a pass. 🧠 Especially Helpful For: If you feel like you've hit a wall, this book is specifically designed to help: Learners who keep just missing out on a pass. Nervous or highly anxious drivers. Autistic, ADHD, dyslexic, or neurodiverse learners who need clarity and structure. Anyone confused by inconsistent test results or struggling with test day pressure. Parents and instructors supporting learner drivers to give the right kind of advice. Behind the Mind of a Driving Examiner is the essential guide you’ve been missing to shift your focus from 'Test Perfection' to 'Road Judgment.' - The Missing Link: Why Standard Learner Driver Books, Guides and Manuals Fail Autistic and SEND Learners
The Missing Link: Why Standard Learner Driver Books, Guides and Manuals Fail Autistic and SEND Learners Learning to drive is supposed to be a journey toward freedom and independence , but for many autistic and neurodiverse learners, it often feels like a road paved with sensory overload, communication barriers, and intense anxiety . Standard driving guides and traditional instruction simply weren't designed with these challenges in mind. They focus on the what (the rules of the road) but completely ignore the how (how a neurodiverse person processes, feels, and learns behind the wheel). We created a book to bridge that gap. Why not listen to our podcast about my book on Spotify Introducing: The First Guide Designed for Understanding, Not Pressure 💚 Autism – The Road to Driving: A Supportive Guide for Autistic and SEND Learners isn’t a generalized rule book—it's a compassionate companion for those who experience the world, and the road, differently. Autism - The Road to Driving (Available to purchase on Amazon Written by Simon J. Harrison , a specialist who is both a qualified driving instructor and an alternative therapist/educator, this book draws on years of experience to create a calm, structured, and genuinely supportive learning framework. "Many learners on the autism spectrum experience the world — and the road — differently," says Simon. "This book helps them, and those supporting them, to find calm, confidence, and independence through understanding, not pressure .” It’s Not One Book, It’s Three Essential Guides To provide support at every stage, the book is uniquely structured into three accessible parts , ensuring it meets the needs of learners, parents, and professionals: 1. The Simplified Illustrated Step-by-Step Guide A clear, visual introduction to the driving journey. This section helps learners prepare, find their comfort zone, and understand how lessons can be adapted to fit them —not the other way around. It includes vital, practical tools like the P.O.R. Plan (Pull Over and Reset) for managing sensory overload and anxiety. 2. Linnea’s Driving Map: A Relatable Story A short, illustrated story that follows Linnea, an autistic learner , on her journey from her first lesson to achieving independence. This is a gentle, empowering way for learners to see themselves in her progress and understand that confidence grows with repetition and structure. 3. The Detailed Professional Handbook This section is a comprehensive, research-informed guide for learners, parents, and driving instructors . It dives deep into everything from managing sensory needs and test anxiety (including CBT, NLP, and mindfulness tools) to legal steps, reasonable adjustments, and strategies for instructors supporting neurodiverse students. Why This Book Matters: You Deserve Confidence This is the first book that truly bridges the worlds of driver education and neurodiversity . It acknowledges that autism and SEND are not barriers to learning to drive—they simply shape how a person experiences the world. By providing the right structure, empathy, and tools, every learner can achieve success. This book is for: Autistic and SEND learners preparing to start lessons. Parents or carers supporting a neurodiverse learner driver. Driving instructors committed to inclusive, sensory-aware teaching. Driving with confidence starts with understanding. 📘 Find Your Copy Today Autism – The Road to Driving: A Supportive Guide for Autistic and SEND Learners is available now on Amazon in paperback and Kindle. 👉 https://amzn.eu/d/aUePNiw Have you read any of our other books? https://www.4frontdrivingschool.co.uk/books-by-4front-driving-school

- Masking: The Hidden Risk Behind Learner Drivers’ Test-Day Behaviour
Masking: The Hidden Risk Behind Learner Drivers’ Test-Day Behaviour Most driving instructors have seen it: a learner who normally drives calmly and safely suddenly behaves very differently on test day. Their driving becomes quicker, sharper, or more intense, and their usual habits disappear. This shift is often labelled as “nerves,” but for many learners, the real cause is something deeper and far less understood: Masking. Masking is when someone hides their true feelings or confidence level by trying to appear more capable, more confident, or more in control than they actually feel. It's a well-known concept in autism, but it can affect any learner under pressure. On a driving test, masking can create real, measurable safety risks. What Is Masking? Masking means putting on a “performance” version of yourself instead of acting naturally. During a driving test, this might look like: Driving faster than usual Being overly assertive or rushed Copying how they think a confident driver should behave Avoiding any sign of hesitation Making quick decisions to hide uncertainty Masking is often subconscious. The learner isn’t trying to be unsafe — they’re trying not to appear unsure. How Masking Shows Up on Test Day Masking can completely alter a learner’s normal driving behaviour, including: 1. Driving Sooner or Faster Than They’re Comfortable With Learners may feel that confident drivers never hesitate, leading to rushed decisions and misjudgement. 2. Taking Risks They Wouldn’t Normally Take This may include being over-eager at junctions, overtaking without need, or approaching hazards too quickly. 3. Hiding Uncertainty Instead of Managing It Rather than slowing down, pausing, or using the techniques learned in lessons, masked behaviour pushes them to “act confident” even when unsure. 4. Overreacting to Small Mistakes Masking can make learners feel they must instantly correct errors to appear in control — often causing larger faults. 5. A Driving Style That Doesn’t Match Their Training Masking disrupts good habits by replacing them with performance, speed, and pressure-driven decision-making. Why Masking Is Especially Common in Autism Masking is strongly associated with autistic individuals, who may feel: A strong need to hide anxiety or confusion Pressure to appear “normal” or socially competent Fear of judgement or criticism Difficulty processing multiple demands under stress A desire to meet expectations at all costs During a driving test, this can lead to pushing through stress rather than managing it, resulting in unsafe decisions or inconsistent driving. However, masking is not exclusive to autism . Any learner under intense pressure can fall into performance mode. Why Masking Creates Safety Risks Masking often looks like confidence on the surface, but underneath, it leads to: Reduced hazard awareness Poor speed control Rushed decisions Late reactions Inconsistent judgement Higher likelihood of serious faults When learners stop driving in their authentic, practised style, they lose the calm structure that keeps them safe. Risk Management: Preventing Masking on Test Day 1. Drive How You Normally Drive The safest approach — and the one most likely to pass — is simply driving as you have during lessons. 2. Trust Your Training Habits, routines, and consistency are far more impressive than speed or boldness. 3. Slow Down When You Need To Pausing to think is a sign of control, not weakness. 4. Expect Nerves Nerves don’t require performance — they require focus and steady control. 5. Talk About Masking Before Test Day Learners should understand the urge to “perform” so they can recognise and resist it. 6. Practise Realistic Test Conditions Mock tests and independent driving help learners feel familiar and less likely to overcompensate. The Bottom Line Masking is one of the most overlooked reasons learners struggle on test day. It replaces calm, consistent driving with pressured, performative behaviour. The message learners need most is simple: **Drive the way you’ve been trained. Drive the way you normally drive. Your authentic driving will pass the test — your mask won’t.** Why not read my book- Behind The Mind of A Driving Examiner Available on Amazon Book overview 🚗 Behind the Mind of a Driving Examiner What Examiners Really Look For — and How to Pass the UK Driving Test with Confidence Why do capable learners fail the driving test — even when they can drive well? The answer isn’t manoeuvres, mirror checks, or perfection. It’s risk, judgement, and what’s happening inside the examiner’s mind . Behind the Mind of a Driving Examiner pulls back the curtain on the UK driving test and reveals what examiners actually assess — moment by moment — and why small mistakes rarely cause failure, but poor reactions do. Written by Simon J. Harrison , a fully qualified UK driving instructor with extensive experience supporting anxious, autistic, and neurodiverse learners, this book changes how you think about the driving test forever. 🔍 What Makes This Book Different? This is not another “how to drive” manual. Instead, it teaches you to: Think like an examiner Understand risk instead of chasing perfection Stay calm and in control under pressure Avoid the hidden traps that cause confident drivers to fail Using a powerful mix of real examiner insight, practical psychology, and story-based learning , this book explains why faults happen — and how to prevent them. 📘 Inside You’ll Discover: ✔️ The Safe Driver’s Signature – the subtle behaviours that instantly make an examiner relax ✔️ The Panic Point – the exact moment most tests are lost (and how to recover safely) ✔️ Why hesitation can be a serious fault (even when you think you’re being careful) ✔️ What the examiner is tapping on the tablet — and when it actually matters ✔️ How to recover from stalls, wrong turns, and mistakes without failing ✔️ Why “masking” confidence on test day creates risk ✔️ How examiners judge speed, positioning, and decision-making ✔️ Why manoeuvres are about observation, not perfection You’ll also follow a short story from the examiner’s seat , watching a real-world test unfold through their eyes — seeing exactly how decisions turn into minor faults, serious faults, or a fail. 🧠 Especially Helpful For: Learners who keep just missing out on a pass Nervous or anxious drivers Autistic, ADHD, dyslexic, or neurodiverse learners Anyone confused by inconsistent test results Learners who drive well in lessons but struggle on test day Parents and instructors supporting learner drivers The book uses a clear, structured, low-stress format , making it accessible and autism-friendly without being exclusive. 🎯 The Core Truth This Book Teaches The driving test is not about being perfect. It is about proving you are safe, predictable, and able to manage risk independently. Once you understand that — everything changes. 👤 About the Author Simon J.
